The Lambs, The Sheep and the Goats – updated 2/1/17

I’ve been told over and over again, by Protestants, that “the church is the collection of all true believers.”  I agree with this statement wholeheartedly. Anyone can make this claim. But who is a True Believer according to Jesus?    Every Protestant tradition from the Mormans to the Iglesias ni Cristo and every denomination, cult and sect in between make this claim.  Are the Presbyterians, the Baptists, the Jehovah Witnesses, those who are the collection of all true believers?  Actually all of the approximately all 45,000 denominations, cults and sects which are protestant or not in communion with the Bishop of Rome make that claim.   But can it really be if many of these communions are teaching opposite and opposing doctrines and new gospels?

Jesus gives us our answer as to who are His sheep.

John 21:

15 So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Tend My lambs.”
16 He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, Shepherd My sheep.”
17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, Tend My sheep.

At this scene, Jesus calls St. Peter by the name he gives him in Matthew 16:17-19, Rock or Kephas in Aramaic.  In the original Greek, the word love has 3 specific meanings, which is not what this post is about.

As Jesus tells us here, he chooses St. Peter to Feed My Lambs, Shepherd by Sheep, Feed My Sheep.  This is how we know we are one of His sheep, his lambs.  No other person is given this charge by Jesus Himself.  This is a right here and right now command to “Shepherd My Sheep.”  Not some of the Sheep, not some of the Lambs, but all the Sheep and all the Lambs.

John 10:27-30 (NASB)

27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; 28 and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand.

29My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.

30 I and the Father are one.”

To be one of the Sheep is to have St. Peter or his successors, as your Shepherd, until Christ comes again in Glory.  While it is true that Satan cannot snatch you out of the Hands of Christ, you most certainly can take yourself out of His hands as many have done, i.e. become a heretic.

Why does Jesus entrust St. Peter with the earthly flock?  Jesus tells us:

John 16: 16In a little while you will see Me no longer, and then after a little while you will see Me.” 17Then some of his disciples asked one another, “Why is He telling us, ‘In a little while you will not see Me, and then after a little while you will see Me’ and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”…

I’ve been challenged a few times that it’s not necessary to be in the Sheepfold of Peter as long as you are in the sheepfold of Christ.  They have pointed me to this scripture verse:

12 What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go out to search for the one that is lost? 13 And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he rejoices more over that one sheep than over the ninety-nine that did not go astray.…

The problem is that if you are lost or went prodigal, you have to be lost from the only Sheepfold that Christ left here on earth until he comes again.  That is the Catholic Church who is the Mystical Body of Christ.  If you are not of this Sheepfold, these words do not apply to non-Christians, which is to say, non-Catholics.

All God’s grace directs you to the Mystical Body of Christ.  Whether you are a Protestant or of a non-Christian religion, you cannot be of that Sheepfold entrusted to Peter and the Apostles.  It is by Grace you have been saved, through Faith in Jesus Christ whose voice is spoken through His Church.

Jesus said:

Luke 10:16  “The one who listens to you listens to Me, and the one who rejects you rejects Me; and he who rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me.”

There is someone we must listen too.  I’ve asked who is the ….WHO LISTENS TO YOU….” in this verse?  It is the Apostles of which Peter is the first of the Apostles.  Of all Christ’s disciples He choose 12 to be Apostles and of this 12 He choose one.

Putting these 3 sets of verses together, it is St. Peter and his successors, who speak with the Authority of Christ.  There is one Shepherd, Christ Jesus, and there is one who Shepherds His flock until the new heavens and the new earth comes down to us (John 21:  15-17).

Peter himself tells us this:
1 Peter 5:1-4   1 Therefore, I exhort the elders among you, as your fellow elder and witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of the glory that is to be revealed, 2 shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness; 3 nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock. 4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.

Each of the particular Churches the Apostles and their successors started are within the 1 Church Christ established on the foundation of the faith of the Apostles…..  Those appointed by the Apostles and their successors are the shepherds of the one flock of Christ.  And when the Chief Shepherd comes in glory to judge the living and the dead, we will receive that unfading crown of glory.

Christ never says to Peter in John 21:15-17 that he will only be the Shepherd of the flock, which is the church, until the reformation occurs.  These Red Letter Words of Jesus Christ are binding upon every Christian, everywhere.

  1. Hi R. Zell i pasted the verses
1John 2:27 “But the anointing which ye have received of H( the Holy Spirit) im abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of ALL THINGS, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in Him” You know everything ,ALL THINGS from the Bible, we can use works of other people but for sure you cant not learn from sources which CONTRADICT what is in the Bible in the first place, which Jesus or The Holy Spirit gave. You cant change THE GOSPEL 300 years after Jesus, to suit religion.

Eph 2:8 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God”

Rom 3:28 “For we hold that one is justified by faith APART FROM WORKS of the LAW”

Rom 4:5 “And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, HIS FAITH is counted as righteousness”

Rom 11:6 “But if it is by grace, it is NO LONGER on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace”

Titus 3:5 “He saved us, NOT BECAUSE OF WORKS DONE BY US IN RIGHTEOUSNESS , but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit”

Rom 10:3 “For, being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish THEIR OWN”

Gal 3:10 “For all WHO RELY ON WORKS of the law, are under a CURSE” Law was given to make you GUILTY not Holy, the Law strength sin,The Law killed,The Law condemned, The law stopped your mouth, made you guilty. Law is BONDAGE,Jesus is PEACE of heart

Rom 3:19-20 – “Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the LAW there shall NO FLESH BE JUSTIFIED in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin”

2 Cor 3:7 ” But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones” says that the 10 Commandments written in a stone, was THE ministration of DEATH and CURSE

Gal 3:13 “Christ hath redeemed us from the CURSE of the law”

1 Cor 15:55-56 “O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the STRENGTH OF SIN is the law.” The Law strengthened SIN ,did not strength holiness. The Law was not given to STOP the sin,but to STRENGTHEN SIN

how do you think we could “fall away” by what behavior?

The problem with these objections is the assumption that everyone who calls himself a “Christian” has actually been born again. Many may have been only RELIGIOUS (like asking dead people for help), many may have put on a good show, but they never were born again by the power of God.
“By their fruit you will recognize them”

A “Believer” is not a person who has said a prayer or walked down an aisle or been raised in a Christian family. While each of these things can be a part of the Christian experience, they are not what makes a
Christian. A Christian is a person who has FULLY trusted in Jesus Christ as the only Savior (and not somebody else like Mary JUST IN CASE she can do something more for you) and therefore possesses the Holy Spirit (John 3:16; Acts 16:31;Ephesians 2:8–9).

Do you have the Spirit of Christ or you trust in PURGATORY TO PURGE YOU, because you DOUBT ?

Then maybe those verses about falling away FROM FAITH are for you, because of you DOUBT in
Christ alone, that He ALREADY PURGED you PERFECTLY

Why The Holy Spirit would say that after the REAL Savior come, and we
are purged once for ALL, WE CAN HAVE NO CONSCIENCE OF SIN !! ??

Heb 10:2 “ONCE (ONCE) PURGED should have had no more CONSCIENCE OF SINS”

You obviously still HAVE consciousness of sins if you trust in purgatory to finish Christ`s work of purging you

The Law was given NOT that you can KEEP IT ,but God raise the bar so high to show you that it was IMPOSSIBLE TO KEEP IT

Romans 3:20 “for by the law is the KNOWLEDGE of sin.” Trough The law we have KNOWLEDGE of sin, NOT FORGIVENESS of sins

Rom 5:13 “For until the law, sin was in the world: but sin is NOT imputed when there is no law”
From Adam and Eve to Moses people were sinning but God did not count
sins against them. Sin came when the commandments was given. Now from
Jesus when the law PASSED, we are not under the Law AGAIN and sin is not
    counted to us

Galatians 3:24-25 ” Wherefore the law WAS our SCHOOLMASTER (teacher about WHAT sin is) to
bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. BUT AFTER
that faith is come, we are NO LONGER under a schoolmaster (The LAW).”

Galatians 3:19 “Why, then, was the LAW given at all? It was added because of
transgressions UNTIL the Seed (JESUS) to whom the promise referred had
    come. ”
Romans 3:27-28 “Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of
works? No, but by the LAW OF FAITH.Therefore we conclude that a man is
justified by faith WITHOUT the deeds of the law”

1 Tim 1:9 “Knowing this, that THE LAW IS NOT MADE FOR RIGHTEOUS MAN , but for the lawless”
(for those who do not have Christ yet)
We are in NEW COVENANT and we are Righteous trough Christ

Rom 3:22 “This RIGHTEOUSNESS IS GIVEN through faith in Jesus Christ TO ALL WHO BELIEVE”
As we see Righteousness is GIVEN on ONE condition- BELIEF not “do this or do that”

  2. What is the point of all these verses again? I lost the reason why you posted them. Refresh my memory.

  3. Every single verse here is affirmed by the Catholic Church. Nothing here is incompatible with our understanding. What is the point again?
